The history of village Anilio

The village "Anilio" or "Chiara" as called in Vlach, is found in 1674 in an official Turkish document. It is situated at an altitude of 1.060m. At the beginning of recorded history was one of the two neighborhoods of Metsovo. For the first time Anilio an official (Turkish) document, shown in 1674, but they certainly existed, as historically recorded the presence of Vlachs in our region much earlier. In 1854 the village was destroyed after the failed attempt to release of the revolutionary movement Theodorakis Grivas in Epirus.

The Anilio liberated from the Turks on October 31, 1912. From 1924 up to the implementation of the Law Capodistrias which made changes to the Charter of Local Self-Government in 1998 formed a separate community. After applying Kapodistrias and as today is the Municipal Department of the Municipality of Metsovo.

Anilio's bridge

Do not forget to visit Anilio's bridge, which is the highest of Egnatia street. Was opened to traffic on April 8, 2009 along with the tunnel entry and exit. Counts piers maximum height of 110 meters and a length of 540 meters.

Passes above Metsovitikos River shortly after exiting the tunnel of the Anilio. It was one of the most important works of Egnatia, as its construction was one of the intractable problems of construction of the Egnatia street, since a large tunnel of Katara, which had been constructed independently from the Egnatia already in 1980, ended in a cliff.

What impresses is the harmony of the huge bridge bond with the natural landscape which in winter with snow-capped mountains is more than impressive. Having the hotel as a base you can visit three ski resorts, Anilio, Metsovo and Pertouli (all located within small distance from the hotel). It is an ideal destination for all seasons.

Metsovo

Located 7 kilometres from our hotel, is the cosmopolitan village Metsovo, with about 5000 residents. It is a traditional resort, along the slopes of Pindos' Mountains at an altitude of 1160m. In Metsovo you can visit the monastery of Virgin Mary, where there is a guesthouse and you can have a walk at the watermill next to the river and the monastery of Saint Nikolas, with exceptional hagiographies. Don't miss the wonderful churches with traditional wooden temples, especially the one in Saint Paraskevi church in the village center. In the village's square houses the art gallery “Averof”, with priceless works of art. Within walking distance is the folk art museum, housed in the mansion of family Tositsa and includes artifacts from 1650 to 1850.

Metsovo is famous for its cheeses, known as Metsovone and Metsovela, produced in the small factory of the foundation “Tositsa”, right in the entrance of the village, and the wine known as “Katogi” of family Averof.

Do not forget to walk through the village's stone streets and freshen with the cold water from the stone flowing fountains.

Ioannina

The city of Ioannina is the capital of county Ioanninon, with about 70000 residents. It is a city with rich cultural tradition, a lot of monasteries and churches. Important jewel of Ioannina is the lake “Pamvotida” and its own small island, in which there is a small housing estate and the known house of Ali Pasa.

You can visit the Archeological and Byzantine Museums, the castle “Its Kale”, the mosques “Fetihie” and “Aslan Pasa”, the Museum of Greek History of its known creator mister Pavlos Vrellis, the Municipal Art Gallery and many other important places. Do not miss to visit the Cave of Peramatos, within 3Km ditance from the city.

Chaliki

Located 19 km from the village Anilio and 23 km from Metsovo is the traditional village Chaliki in which you can visit the beautiful churches, the famous monasteries, stone bridges and the Drakolimni of Verligka.

ΗThe Drakolimni Verligkas is one of the three in Pindos and located on a plateau at an altitude of 2 kilometers and 50 meters, just below the top of Mount Laghmos or Peristeri. You can also visit the 3 stone bridges and churches of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Georgios and the Prophet Elijah (from the 17th century, built in early 1700 AD). In the village Chaliki is located and the famous monastery of Panagia Galaktotrofousa and the Monastery of the Holy Cross with 13 domes, unique in the Balkans, symbolizing the 12 apostles and Christ. Miniature of the monastery is located in Cyprus.

The village Chaliki falls within the Aspropotamos region which is one of the purest and unadulterated areas of Greece and has been declared National Park by presidential decree.

Valia Kalda

The National Park of Pindos, called Valia Kalda, is situated in Pindos' mountains, north of Metsovo, at the borders between the county of Grevena and Ioannina and near the villages Milea, Krania and Perivoli.

In the park are the valleys called Valia Kalda and Arkoudorema and the mountains called Ligos and Mavrovouni.

Here lives the protected species of brown bear, wolf and wild coat and is full of deep forests, cliffs, paths and rare flora.

Lake of River Aoos

The artificial lake of river Aoos is 30 minutes away from village Metsovo and at an altitude of 1300m.

It is an important biotope of the area and you can travel around it by car or by bicycle, enjoying the scenery of the slopes of the Pindos lapped at its edges. The sight is breathtaking, especially during winter, where everything is covered in snow.
